TO MEET THE STANDARD, YOU HAVE TO EXCEED THE STANDARD
Just before the 24-hour mark, GORUCK Selection Class 023 went black. It’s been 7 years since the last black class, but 023 serves as a strong reminder that Selection is not for everyone.
“What I have found over and over again is: you can’t simply train to meet the standard, you must train to exceed the standard. Then when you’re placed under stress, you’ll meet it. That’s true of every Selection I’ve ever participated in individually, or that I have been a part of running. Self-awareness and self-assessment are one of the hardest things to do in life. To be honest with yourself and engage in that process is very difficult. And that’s where the candidates failed in this particular event because they were not prepared to assess themselves completely.
Just about every candidate in GORUCK Selection Class 023 trained well, they trained to standard. And that’s fine until you throw in the unknown and the demon that finds its way inside your head. Nobody here had trained to exceed the standard. And to meet the standard, you have to exceed the standard.”
